THE CREATION OF THE FLORENCE BREWER
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP TRUST
On September 10, 1958, the Woman’s Club of Olympia unanimously approved the creation of The Florence Brewer Memorial Scholarship Trust.
Florence Brewer was a member of The Woman’s Club of Olympia and upon her death she bequeathed funds to establish both the Club’s Building Fund as well as a Scholarship Trust. Starting with a total of $4,000 the funds were allocated to the trust with the caveat that additional funds may be placed into the trust at any time.
The Trust’s creation document states that the Trust’s principal shall be maintained intact and shall not be given, granted, or donated to any person. The earnings and interest or earnings may be made available to provide scholarships by grand to worthy students of both sexes for the purpose of continuing education and studies.
The Trust is maintained by three Trustees who are appointed and serve for a period of 3 years. One Trustee is elected each year and the retiring Trustee is replaced at the spring election. The Trust is audited annually by an audit committee and a report made by the Treasurer at the Annual Meeting (June).
CREATION OF THE JUNE MARTINSON SCHOLARSHIP
June Martinson joined the Woman's Club in the 1980's. She was a retired nurse and her husband was a retired teacher. She held several offices including Vice President during the late 1990's. When she died about 5 years ago she left $10,000 to the Woman's Club of Olympia for Scholarships. The Board decided to award a $1,000 Scholarship in her name for 10 years. The money was added to the Scholarship Fund with the understanding that we would take out $1,000 each year for 10 years to pay for this Scholarship.
